about the foundry

Type Invaders was founded in 2000 as a small independent typography studio focused on the design, production and sales of original and high quality typefaces. Its activities include:

  • Development of new typefaces, on exclusive or non-exclusive basis
  • Modification of existing typefaces
  • Expansion of existing typefaces by adding more weights or variants
  • Expansion of existing typefaces by expanding the characterset to support additional languages, i.e. Scandinavian, Baltic, Eastern European, Turkish, Russian, Slavic or Greek
  • Conversion of artwork to fonts
  • Custom lettering
  • Conversion of font formats for use on different operating systems

about its founder

Paul van der Laan operates from a studio near the seaside in The Hague as a typographic designer. He runs Type Invaders, his privately owned typography studio, and is founding partner of Bold Monday, an independent font foundry.

He is a tutor at the Type & Media masters course at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. He has given workshops and lectures about type design at numerous schools, including the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Basel, Konstfack in Stockholm, ECAL in Lausanne, AFAD in Bratislava and at various conferences, including Typo Berlin, Forum Typography and ATypI.

He is the designer of acclaimed typefaces, including Rezident (Linotype), Flex (Type Invaders), Chalet Comprimé (House Industries), FF Kievit Pro (FontFont, in conjunction with Mike Abbink), Feisar (Type Invaders).
